Every ceremony in Bali is ornate and spectacular, but cremations seem to be one of the most spectacular. Preparation alone can take several weeks and the final torching is suppose to be amazing. Unfortunately, this trip I only got to view preparations. Have to leave something for the next visit.
Incredibly ornate multi-tiered towers are created using bamboo, paper, silk, wood, tinsel, flowers, and just about anything that could make it look more extravagant. The height of the tower is dependent on the status of the deceased. However, today height is limited by the power lines. The body is placed at the top of the tower and carried to the cremation site on the shoulders of a group of men from the village.
At the cremation site the body is transferred to a sarcophagus usually in the shape of an animal. Then the whole thing is torched in one gala flaming event.
